Hachiroku - Rust in Peace
Having featured the VIP two-tone Pandora, this is a yellow Pandora AE86, whose appearance is at the other end of the scale but, nevertheless, still impressive! Weathering an RC drift build is a whole other ball game.
This build features an inner fender set, which has been built up structurally. It’s the first time Matt has ever built a polycarbonate engine bay while cutting out every single piece of empty space. Other features include mismatched panels, some new and old parts, rusting detail, Scale Dynamics wheels.
How does Matt Youkhana achieve this weathered effect?
“I typically do a lot of research online, looking at which areas rust in a particular body I'm building, in real life. Then I proceed to paint a few layers of basecoat and final color (sometimes clear as well) and go back to sand the parts down. I use a diamond bit and dremel to rot away panels. I then use styrene to make the chassis layers behind it to give it more depth. For actual rust, I either grind down shavings of steel and glue them to the bodies, then apply salt water to them, or I can just go in with oil based canvas paints and dab the areas with different shades of black and brown. Oil paint penetrates lexan for a more permanent fix. However it takes about 2-3 weeks to fully dry, leaving only pigments of the color behind. This gives the full texture of rust.”
